SELANTIC SLING

Selantic Slings are a new generation of lifting slings made from high performance fibres, which are approved for use onshore, offshore and for subsea installation. They offer unrivalled levels of performance due to their unique choice of construction and materials.

CONSTRUCTION
Selantic Slings are made in an “endless” loop construction, with no resultant strength losses due to twisting, braiding and termination of the fibres. They are encased in durable laminated covers made from Cordura© with the option of using various heat resistant and/or tear resistant fibres (Aramid), if required. This method of construction has two major advantages. Firstly, the endless loop construction means there are no strength losses due to the termination. The weakest part of a wire or rope is usually the splice. By removing the need for a splice, Selantic Slings offer safe and predictable lifting. It is also possible to manufacture to very accurate dimensional tolerances, so that slings can be delivered in precisely matched pairs. This method of manufacture also means that Selantic Slings can be made in very short lengths, something which traditional wire rope grommets cannot achieve.

MATERIALS
Selantic specify Kevlar©, Dyneema© and Technora© as the load bearing fibres because they have a high strength to weight ratio. Criteria for use determine which of these fibres will be used, since resistance to heat, elongation characteristic and creep varies between these fibres.

The combination of Selantic’s method of construction and choice of materials gives a sling, which has the following features:

 LIGHT WEIGHT
1/7th the weight of steel rope in air.
1/20th the weight of steel wire rope in water.
1/3rd the weight of polyester in air.
 LOW ELONGATION AT BREAK/HIGH STIFFNESS
Kevlar© and Dyneema© have an elongation at break of just 3.7%. This gives a stiffness slightly lower than steel, but many times higher than Polyester sling/rope. Selantic Slings from these materials are therefore very stable, have very low stretch characteristics and offer safe and predictable lifting of heavy loads.
 HIGH STRENGTH
Slings with a minimum break load from 0 to 2300 tonnes can be manufactured.
 SAVE DAMAGE
Selantic Slings are soft and flexible and avoid damage to painted surfaces. They are ideal for underslinging of items such as coated pipe spool pieces. By a choked or basket connection direct to the structure, these slings can save the cost for lifting eyes and shackles. This method has been successfully used in a number of subsea installation cases.
 EASE OF HANDLING
Due to low weight, Selantic Slings are easy to handle, saving manpower, complicated rigging and injuries.
RESISTANCE TO HEAT AND CHEMICAL ATTACK
By using special types of materials Selantic is able to offer slings for applications where exposure to high temperatures and aggressive chemicals are a problem.
 LONG TERM DURABILITY
The durability and low creep of Selantic Slings makes them the perfect choice for long term applications. They are currently in use in a number of subsea strapping and tethering applications with a design life of 30 years.

TESTING
Each sling is proof loaded to 40% of MBL and issued with an ILO Form 4 certificate by DNV.

A TOTAL ENGINEERING DESIGN SERVICE
Selantic’s engineering team is there to help you and are able to offer you cost-effective solutions to your lifting, strapping and tethering problems. They are able to offer advice on the whole lifting or tethering system, including the interface points between the sling and the object being lifted. Full technical details including testing and approval procedures and information about heat and chemical resistance are available upon request.

Our aim is to offer you safe lifting, strapping and tethering while at the same time saving you time and money.
